#142 - A Runner's Story (The Arthur (Stig) Blomkvest Story)

Episode #142 In this week’s blog/podcast we will interview Arthur Blomkvest (aka Stig), a 55 year old from Cape May, New Jersey. Stig started running cross country in high school but didn’t get serious about running again until his mid 40’s. Stig is also one of the leaders of the South Jersey Runners community. Stig just accomplished a goal of running his first ever marathon, and we are going to break down how he did it.

Coach: Thanks for sharing your story with us Stig. You just came off of an amazing accomplishment, but before we get into that, let's dive into your life a bit. What do you do for a living?

Stig: Acme Markets 37 years admin receiver.

Coach: Any Children? Wife?

Stig: My wife Karin & I have 5 children.

Coach: Take us back to the start of your journey. You said you were in cross country, then didn't get back into running until your mid 40’s. What got you back into running?

Stig: In my 40's, I was out of shape. I started the p90x program at home. My daughter got me into going to the gym. I would do HIIT classes for over 7 years. Through those classes, I built up my core and in turn got me to become a faster runner.

Coach: How did it feel to be back into running? What kind of early success did you experience?

Stig: About two years into getting into serious shape, I won a local race in Sea Isle NJ 5k. Since 2014, I’ve run in over 200 races, mainly 5k’s. I’ve won over 14 races. I didn’t go into running to win races, I was just trying to be competitive. Hard work does pay off.

Coach: That's awesome. Arthur, have you experienced any challenges or setbacks with your running? If so, how did you deal with it?

Stig: Running, just like life, you certainly experience ups and downs. Between injuries and ups and downs with my confidence, it can test you. My first marathon in Bucks County, N.J. I bonked out at mile 18.

Coach: Wow, that was a setback for sure. I know that didn't stop you! Take us through your most recent accomplishment. Running and completing your first full marathon at the age of 55 years old. What feelings rushed through you as you crossed that line?

Stig: I learned a lot from my setback and trained properly this year. With proper training and focus, I just completed my first marathon! The  Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach. The last 6 miles were rough but I finished in 4 hours 25 minutes. It was an incredible feeling.

Coach: I'm so proud of you brother. Let's give our readers some practice advice to get them running. What At The Moment Are Your Healthy Habits?

Stig: I like to keep things simple. My healthy habits are to consume less sugar and fats. Drink lots of water.

Coach: Wow, that's Great! We are very happy to see you crush your marathon goal. We will be cheering you on for your next race.

Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Before we let you go........

WHAT can you say to our listeners who may be ready to start their journey tomorrow?

Stig: My advice with running whether big or small, have a goal, stick to it, have patience and have fun.
