The Power of One (A Mother’s Mindset)
-Meet Sandra Martinez
In next week’s podcast, we will be continuing our discussion of self care for parents. In particular, parents with children that have disabilities! Episode 28 comes out Monday 12/16/19
Last week Lisa Gallagher gave us valuable information on resources for parents who have special needs. One organization was www.faces4autism.org. Another great source is an organization that I’m very fond of and that is The South Jersey Field of Dreams! Field of Dreams helps children and adults with special needs get involved in the game of baseball. Every year Keep Calm and Run To The Best You supports this organization by hosting a special 5k event. Our event raise money to help the organization maintain the grounds and provide food for the games. The Keep Calm and Run To The Best You 5K will be held May 30th, 2020, in Absecon NJ.

I would like to introduce you to one such mother that takes advantage of the benefits offered by the Field of Dreams organization. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to my friend Sandra Martinez. I had the privilege of interviewing Sandra Martinez. Sandra is always smiling at 5k events in our community along the Jersey Shore.
Sandra is a mother of 2 children Cassandra (30) and Anthony (20). Anthony has autism and is a active member of the South Jersey Field of Dreams organization. Baseball isn‘t the only sport Anthony enjoys. Anthony plays basketball, runs 5k’s and is a black belt in karate! Anthony has been active in these activities since the age of 6. Children with Autism are drawn to water, so mom got him swimming lessons at an early age!
Sandra is a very powerful mother, that I've met at different 5K events. Sandra was very nervous about recording our podcast. I couldn't think of a more dynamic lady in the running community to share her experience with the world! I learned a lot about Sandra, and why Anthony is so successful. It’s because of this: Mom decided to see his abilities and NOT his disabilities! I loved that! We all have a lot to learn from that statement alone. Look for your strengths, build any perceived weaknesses and move forward without excuses.
Sandra works swing shift. Sandra handles the needs of Anthony and her family, yet and she still find time to run 5k’s. Sandra also intermittent fast & workout daily. Here are 5 tips that you can put in place today:
Take me time.
Exercise and watch your diet.
Find a support network for yourself.
Get involved with an autism support group online or in person.
Become a good advocate for your youth? By knowing the laws and your rights as a parent with a child with a disability.
Listen in on Monday to the Keep Calm And Run To The Best You (The Podcast). Hear for yourself how Sandra has been implementing these strategies in her own life.
