#45 - Running and Intermittent Fasting Stories (Amy Zabrowski )
Meet Amy Zabrowski. Learn how a 44-year young mother of two from San Diego, CA took up running in 2014 and has been using Intermittent Fasting as a way to not only improve her runs but gain more muscle tone and definition throughout her body! Amy is a faithful listener of our podcast and I wanted to bring her on the show to share her story. Amy originally said that she doesn't know what she can contribute to the show. I said: “Everyone has a story! That's all I want is your story. Then I found out she Intermittent Fast as well, now I'm really intrigued!”

Coach Tadris and Amy Zabrowski Interview
CT: Where are you from and where do you live now?
AZ: I am originally from Detroit. My parents and I moved to San Diego when I was 11 years old. I also lived in Phoenix for 10 years, now I am back to San Diego. I have been in San Diego for over 20 years in total.
CT: Were you an athlete in school?
AZ: No Way!!
CT: What year did you pick up running and why?
AZ: 2014. I was inspired by a friend. My friend invited me to run my first half marathon in Los Cabos. I began training in November for the February Half. I trained myself. Started with 3 miles. I would run two times during the week for 3 miles. On the weekend I would do my long run. I added 1 mile to my long run each week. While I was training for my first half I heard somewhere “try something for 10 years”. That quote is what inspired me to not stop running after my first half. When I heard “try something for 10 years” it sounded absurd! At the same time, it made sense. You have to allow yourself to get good at something before you decide to drop it.
CT: How does running make you feel?
AZ: I do enjoy running. I feel like I am doing something good for myself. I feel accomplished. However, it’s not always awesome. I recently learned and came to accept that all runs are not going to be good. When I have a bad run, I just need to chop it up as a bad run. It doesn’t mean that I did something wrong or I have to start over. It is not the end of my running career. Running has taught me how to endure physically challenging times. Keep running even when I am hurting, tired, hungry; at the same time listen to my body and know when it is time to take a break.
CT: What Is It That You Do For A Living?
AZ: I am a Lead Case Manager at a substance use disorder program.
CT: How Long Have You Been In Your Profession & What Do You Like Most About What You Do?
AZ: I have been in the field for 8 years. Of course, I like helping others find a new way of life. I feel so great to be working during this COVID pandemic. I feel like I am really being of service.
CT: You are providing a great service, Amy. How long have you been intermittent fasting?
AZ: 6 months
CT: What made you give intermittent fasting a try?
AZ: I kept seeing people post about it on the running Facebook groups that I am in. I think that is what inspired me to get started. Then I found your podcast and it inspired me to keep with it.
CT: What changes in your body have you noticed?
AZ: I’ve lost inches and beginning to see some muscle definition.
CT: How has Intermittent Fasting affected your runs?
AZ: I have been practicing running in a fasted state for maybe a few months. I have gone up to 10 miles now. I love running in the fasted state. I always struggled with running with a full stomach, it did not work for me.
CT: With your work & running schedule how do you fit it all in?
AZ: Currently, I am not doing great with it. I have no excuse. My kids take care of themselves, basically. I have a great work schedule. I am trying to get motivated to do my weekly runs. My Sunday runs are great.
CT: What’s your current fasting and running routine?
AZ: I fast for 18 hours and eat in a 6-hour window. On weekends I am very happy when I do OMAD. (only one meal a day) I exercise a few times a week. I cross-train with Bootcamp and Zumba. I bring a Zumba class to the program on Wednesday’s. I would like to run Tuesdays, Thursday’s and Sundays. My rest day is usually Monday or Friday depending on how I feel.
CT: What are some of your challenges?
AZ: Motivation. I make too many excuses. Not enough accountability. Self-pity. #1 challenge is that I have a teenage daughter!
CT: How do you plan or what have you done to overcome those challenges?
AZ: I will look at gaining some accountability. Although I enjoy running alone, perhaps running with a buddy will help me stay focused during the week. Last but not least, I’m considering bringing you on as my coach!

Let me ask you this, can you see yourself sticking with intermittent fasting?
AZ: I feel more in control of food during Intermittent Fasting. It is easy for me. I have tried almost everything. I love Intermittent Fasting because it is flexible. You have taught me through your podcasts the importance of combining Intermittent Fasting along with Whole30. I took your 7-day challenge and I am still eating clean, and I’m currently on day 12. I lost 3 pounds in the 7 days. I lost 10-13 pounds overall since beginning Intermittent Fasting. I also quit artificial sweeteners. Those pounds came off fast at first, then stopped. I knew I needed to change what I was eating during my eating window.
CT: What are you excited about today, any special events coming up that you are working on at that moment?
AZ: I am excited about joining the running group. My marathon is rescheduled for fall TBD. Rock n Roll San Diego.
CT: We are excited about your goal of running your full marathon in the fall!

Little by little. Do not beat yourself up.
Do not compare yourself to others. You are a runner, not a jogger.
