Running is a great mental and physical release for us all. Running over time, however, can create a vast array of nagging injuries. In this week's blog/podcast we will discuss the most common running injuries and how to prevent them with physical therapist Jared Mannello of Ventnor Wellness. In the podcast only, I will share with everyone my own personal results from another round of the Whole30 and Intermittent Fasting process. My month went from March 15th - April 15th. On the final day, I ran a 6:58 mile!

The Coach Tadris & Jared Mannello Interview

Coach: Please tell us a little background as to what you do for a living and for how long have you been in your field?

Jared: I have been a Physical Therapist for 10 years now.

Coach: What Moved You To Get Into This Field?

Jared: I grew up playing sports; a high school athletic trainer and a PT.  I always wanted to be in medicine, so I volunteered at PT clinics in college.

Coach: Where are you located at the moment?

Jared: Ventnor Wellness in Ventnor NJ. We have an hyperbaric oxygen chamber, a massage therapist, vitamin drips, yoga, and of course physical therapy all in one place.

Coach: Man that’s a one stop oasis for any runner, lol.

So, Jared, you have been a physical therapist for 10 years, and in your time of helping people recover, what are the most common injuries that you have seen associated with running?

Most Common Injuries For Runners

Jared:

Low back pain: sprains/strains

Lateral hip pain: bursitis, ITB syndrome

Knee pain: Patellar tendonitis, ITB syndrome

Ankle pain: Achilles tendinitis, Plantar fasciitis

Coach: I came to you in September 2019 as I was preparing for the Ocean City Half Marathon. I needed to see you because I hurt my knee playing basketball 3 weeks before the race. I talked about it in Episode #17 of our podcast. It was called:

DNF stands for Do Nothing Foolish (How To Heal A Injury A Week Before The Race.)

What did you see in my legs when I came to you?

Jared: When you came in although you ran a lot, we noticed that your glutes were weak. Your hamstrings were not firing up either. Your knee had a lot of inflammation but it was more about us gaining strength and flexibility in the muscles around the knee.

Coach: I was surprised to hear you tell me; “If you weren’t already a runner, I would tell you not to run this race. Your body will work off of muscle memory.” From hearing that, I made sure to follow all your instructions, and worked on flexibility, got into a hyperbaric oxygen tank, and a salt tank to get your blessing to run the race.

Why is it important not to just push through the pain and get a nagging issue checked out?

Jared: Pain is an essential symptom, not just an experience.  It is telling you something is wrong, figure it out and fix it.

Coach: Jared What Has You Excited Today?

Any special projects that you are working on at that moment?

Jared: Overcoming COVID-19 currently; re-organizing many services at VW, including new personal training exercise and fitness classes

Coach: Jared Thank you so much for being on the show/blog giving us all great tips on keeping ourselves healthy year-round to be ready for any race distance.

Before we let you go, give us one parting piece of advice and we'll say goodbye:

Final Takeaways

When listening to the podcast, you would hear that these common injuries are due to receptive use over time. These common injuries can be avoided by taking time after every run to stretch and recover. Most runners, if we only have 30 minutes we will use all 30 minutes for running. To stay healthy, let’s spend 20-25 minutes running while stretching afterwards for 5-10 minutes. Other takeaway is to pay attention to your body and go get looked at before it’s too late. Feet issues, go find a podiatrist. Back issues, find a good chiropractor. Need to recover from something more painful in time for an event, find a great physical therapist!

I loved Jared being on the show! I appreciated his care with me during my time of recovery. Jared is a family man, he loves his wife and three children and that bleeds over into his passion for his clients.
