How To Stick With Good Running Habits Every Day

  1. Start Out By Tracking Everything. I currently have over 6,530 miles on my Nike Run Club app. It’s very motivating to see progress no matter how small.

My original weight loss journey took me to tracking calories on MyFitnessPal app. Tracking my calories took me from 217 pounds down to 185 pounds. What happened when I stopped running and tracking calories from June 2012 - November 2012? I ballooned back up to 207 pounds.

2. Eat To Be A Better Runner: Now in 2020, I no longer need to track my food daily. I found out how to eat, for the person I wanted to become.

We can’t outrun a bad diet so…..

I ask myself…… Self, will this pizza get me to my fastest race time? Do I really want 165lbs and a faster 5k time or, do I just keep saying that?  Oftentimes we say that we want to become one thing yet our actions are doing something different?

We are a sum of our daily habits.

The only way to be totally mindful of what those habits are is to track them. Is it not rewarding to see the app calculate your new distance or your fastest times. Or if you have a daily diet calorie goal and you tracked it, it feels good to go to bed under your calorie goal. Progress is progress and that is what feels so good. Experience that more by tracking.

Experienced runners that use Nike Run Club, Strava, or UnderArmor MapMyRun…….. It’s one thing to press start and finish the workout, but take time to jot down notes in each workout. (Maybe that’s a habit you need to start with) Notes such as time of day, sneakers are worn, energy level, weather, what was eaten before a workout, or how many hours that you fasted before running. If you use the run, walk, run method, what were your intervals?

3.Make Sure To Track What’s Important To YOU; Sometimes we may get caught up on the numbers of miles run or the number on the scale. Track more than that. There are a ton of non-scale victories along with no timed or mileage victories. You must ask yourself what matters to you. Fitting into clothes, the happy feelings after each run, the mental clarity, the nice sculpted booty, the ability to run to catch a taxi, the ability to run after your children or grandchildren. When we are tied to only numbers we forget all of these benefits. We may get discouraged from a bad run or the number on the scale didn’t go down as much as we wanted. Remember you NEED the not so good runs as much as the good runs. It is the compound effect of the daily habits that will lead you to the greatest gains. If you like to track a streak, that’s great. However, if your streak ends, don’t get discouraged. Get back up immediately. Don’t let two days go by, be the person that gets back up.

I hope that these tips help you run to the best you!
