Mental Training For Runners (No More Excuses) “I Have No Time For Exercise” Blog/Podcast

Adjustments.jpeg

In this week’s blog/podcast we will explore the mental side of running. Often times when we are dealing with stress it causes us to not run and skip out on any of our workouts. We can regain our MOJO by using our conscious mind to recognize the stress and deal with it. When we confront our stress head-on, we can regain control and not allow the stress to control us. We will be able to avoid the excuses our mind tells us. One such excuse is: “I have no time to exercise.”

Listen Now To This Week’s Podcast: #33 - No More Excuses, I Have No Time To Exercise/My Disney Takeaways.

For my readers, I will focus on one brief point in this article and that is HOW to overcome the excuse of not having time. Jeff Galloway mentions in one of his books that the last several Presidents and Vice Presidents all exercise at least 30 minutes per day. We are not busier than a president are we? Experienced runners may not have a problem finding time for their runs. Do you as an experienced runner find the time for other exercises that will enhance your runs? These tips can help you as well.

Ideally, it would be great to get in a 30 min straight workout. Sometimes that can be a challenge to find that window. Here’s what to do.

  1. Don’t be afraid of 5 or 10-minute workouts. Yes, they add up. Can you run for 10 minutes in the morning before work? Can you take a 10-minute walk at lunch? Can you run your dog for 10 minutes after dinner? Yes, yes, and yes you can. Substitute the word run for any exercise that you want to immerse yourself into.

  2. Utilize the Morning: Take a few minutes in the morning to organize your day and find those pockets of time to get your workout in.

The benefits of buying out this time for yourself is this:

  1. Exercise equals a better quality of sleep.

  2. After your exercise, you are nicer to co-workers and family members.

  3. As you set out times of 5 and 10-minute workouts segments, they often turn into longer periods of time.

  • Do these tips make sense to you?

  • Have you tried a technique like this before?

  • Do you have any questions about this subject?

We would like to hear from you, please feel free to leave a comment or question. Your thoughts drive futures podcast. Thank you.

Personal Experience:

I have personally used these tips myself for years now. Even today I have started a walking/running streak of a mile per day. I call it the #coachtadrisstreak and I’m currently approaching the 80th day of the streak. I also have a goal of running 100 miles in the month of January. As we are beyond the halfway point in the month, I need an average of 3.5 miles per day. I don’t start out thinking about running 3.5 miles. I wake up and take the dog for a 1-mile walk for 15 minutes. Later in the day, I do a 3 mile run at my convenience.

My approach, lead me to my second Disney half marathon on January 11th, 2020. It was an amazing time as I got to spend time with my family in Orlando. I also got to share my experience with a member of our program Chris Ballard from NJ. Chris ran her second ever half marathon. It’s no doubt she enjoyed her October Atlantic City marathon better than the hot and humid Florida race. Chris absolutely hates running in the heat. This makes me all the more proud of Chris. Chris booked her Disney trip with her sister and a group of friends to support her. It also helped that Chris and her friends had a cruise planned around her Disney experience. Congratulations Chis for adding Donald Duck to your amazing medal collection.

Here are some of my highlights from the amazing trip.

  • The race was great! Time was 2:09:55 for the half marathon which was a ten-minutes improvement from last year’s Disney race.

  • Jeff Galloway signed my book and race bib

  • Room/Resort was great at Disney. We stayed at the Disney All-Star Movies Resort!

  • We did one day at Disney's Hollywood Studios. We loved the new Star Wars land. Rise of Resistance experience is just that, a great experience!

  • I found out that Disney Springs is my favorite place ever! They have Starbucks, Dine-In Movies, Planet Hollywood, House of Blues, Splitsville Bowling, and more.

  • My son Shealen purchased a remote control BB8 Droid (Star Wars toy, everyone loved it.)

  • We went on a cruise immediately after the half marathon. Our first time ever taking a cruise before. It was a little rocky but a great experience overall.

  • We had time to kill while waiting for our flight. We returned to Disney Springs and had some Starbucks and caught the movie “Just Mercy” with Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx. Absolutely great movie.

  • Playing poker in the airport lobby with son was fun.

I’m inspired to create amazing experiences with both my family and my Run To The Best You community. I’m already planning on returning to Disney for the 2021 Run Disney Marathon Series as I attempt to complete the Dopey Challenge. The Dopey Challenge includes running a 5k on Thursday, 10k on Friday, Half Marathon on Friday, and concluding with a full Marathon on Sunday.
