#75 - Running Mantra & Coaching Yourself

IMG_0173.jpeg

Do you talk to yourself? You should! At times you need expert advice and you are the expert of your own body. Members of the Keep Calm And Run To The Best You program oftentimes hear me in their heads as they run. When we run together they hear me from time to time remind them to “Breathe, Focus, You Got This” or “Shoulders down and relaxed, core tight, chest out like your proud, lookup, breath, focus, you got this.”

Many people think the word mantra only has to do with yoga practice.

Press play on this week's podcast to hear me explain how you can implement using mantras while running.

The word mantra is derived from two Sanskrit words—manas (mind) and tra (tool). Mantra means “a tool for the mind,”

What is Sanskrit?; an ancient Indo-European language of India.

A mantra can be defined as an affirmation or meditative cue. Mantras are said to increase in benefit through repetition and meditative reflection.

While running trains our bodies, what we say in our head is equally important throughout your run. Learning what to say can be a mental exercise and create the discipline you need to address problems as they arise.

What you tell yourself matters. What are you saying to yourself while you run? You have the power to become powerful; it begins with what you tell yourself.

Here are some great words to say to yourself:

  • I eat hills for breakfast

  • Right, left, right, left, right

  • Keep going

  • I will finish strong

  • Make it to the mailbox

  • Make it to the tree

  • Make it to the car

  • I am strong

  • I am healthy

  • One step at a time

  • Quick feet

  • Run just keep running

  • It is hard…. I can do hard things

  • Yes I can

  • I AM an athlete

  • Breathe it in, run it out

  • I think I can, I think I can

  • This will not kill you

  • Beat the clock

  • Earn this

  • What if you can

  • Take another step

  • Just one more mile

  • One more segment (run, walk, run)

  • Run, sun, fun, won, run, sun, fun, won

Benefits of Self Talk / Coaching Yourself

1. Increased confidence in your running

Thoughtful words echo our deepest feelings.

The repetition of these words can help release stored tension and face obstacles head-on. Mantras help us uproot issues by giving us a chance to dig deeper.

2. Solidification of goals

Running is such an individual sport and each one of us has personal goals we would like to obtain. During a race, you are constantly challenging yourself to be the best version of yourself that day. What we tell ourselves can make all the difference in the world as we look at the results.

3. Evoke muscle memory

The best way to learn and improve is through practice and repetition. Telling your body to keep moving, and reminding your body that it can finish strong will evoke all those practices. Your muscles will respond nicely. Talking to yourself brings awareness to your running experience.

What if you are running with a partner?

Just say these mantras out loud. Your partner may not want to show that they are struggling, you may be helping them as well.

What are some of your mantras that you say during your runs that are not listed above? Comment below.

No matter what you say, remember to…

My 2020 (1,200 Mile Goal) (How Am I Doing?)

The question below was posted on social media.

Running Goal For 2020 was to run 1,200 Miles

I'm at 1,056!

I Only Need 72 Miles The Next 2 Months.

OR DO I........

KEEP 100 MILE MONTH STREAK GOING? (Currently @ 10 Months)

Social Media Response:

Carol Kelley: Keep your streak!

Geri Paslay: Keep the streak! Provided no injuries.

Maykel Khilla: Keep the streak! You’ve been going all year, so why stop now. Increase your goal of 1,250!

Don: Adjust your goal.

Charlie: 100 per month, keep that going.

My Personal Friends Commented:

Angela: I don’t see why you would finish the last 150 miles. I’ll cheer for you from my sofa.

Julie: Your commitment is amazing! I’d keep the 100 a month streak going and blow your overall 2020 goal out of the water!

Chris: Of course you will still get the 100 miles in for the next 2 months....is that even a question?!?! 🤦🏽‍♀️🤣

(My Response: Chris Ganiel Ballard but come on, I can coast with 77 😜

Chris Response: What’s another 23! Piece of cake! 🍰

Marie: I can’t believe you asked this! You can and will crush it! 100 miles a month is nothing!

Lisa Keating: 100 miles a month, don’t bail out now!

Melissa Green: I like this kind of goal! I might start today but with a smaller goal!

What would you do, coast the rest of the year or continue the streak of 100 miles? (Comment Below) Thank you.
