Episode #145 - In this week’s blog/podcast we will discuss: My personal experience of following another round of Whole30. This round falls on the 4th anniversary of my trying the protocol.

I will also share my notes and takeaway’s from Melissa Hartwig's follow-up book: Food Freedom Forever. The combination of a reset & making mindful decisions around our food choices can make all the difference in the world with your running practice.

This Week's Topic:

Running my “Food Freedom” Plan (Podcast notes and highlights of “Food Freedom Chapter 1) 

Don’t think that food freedom is eating anything you want without consequences. 

What food freedom is: Giving up food obsession without calorie counting and being a slave to the scale. (I appreciate how much time this saves me. Not counting every calorie helps to eliminate stress.) 

Finally we can be in control of our food and not allow food to control us. 

Getting to that point in your journey is hard. The diet industry thrives on us never receiving that freedom.

Melissa Hartwig, the founder of the Whole30 reset, says: “There are 3 steps to finding your food freedom.”

  1. Embracing Your Reset

  2. Finding Your Balance

  3. Recovery From Slips 

If we look at this cycle, it’s simple to see that when we reset our body by eliminating the harmful, processed sugar, and grains for 30 days we feel great.

Second part of the cycle is once we reintroduce the problematic food groups back into our eating plan, we will know for sure how each food group affects our own body. We are a study of one. How does this sugar affect me? What happens when I eat plain yogurt three days straight? How do I feel after eating fried chicken? You may find that one yogurt is fine with your body. You also may find that three straight days with one yogurt per day may cause bloating. 

Here is where after your reset you find your balance. 

Lastly, Lose Control!

Yes…….. losing control is built within the food freedom process.

My Current Experience:

Four years later, I still use this method to gain control over my energy levels. I use resets to get me into prime racing shape before a marathon. I allow myself to practice food freedom while on vacation or on special game nights with my son. I find that there are times in which I’m not a mindful eater for months at a time. When I may have thought it was only 2 or 3 weeks. No, try 2 - 3 months. Losing weight and keeping it off is a lifelong journey. It’s a journey worth taking.

When people find out that I’m a grandfather, they are surprised. They always say: “You don’t look like you are old enough to have grandchildren.” To that, I say “Thank You.” We can’t outrun a bad diet, although at times I think that I can. We can’t. I have always run my fastest mile times during a month of clean eating.

In conclusion, be mindful of your choices.
If you have pizza, enjoy the pizza, then return to your clean eating. Make sure you align your food freedom choices with your running goals.

The Week Was for Us:

I got completly heart broken on April 19th as I was excited to purchase my first Dopey Challenge @ Disney World. For those that are unaware a Dopey Challenge is a four day race from a 5k on Thursday, 10k Friday, half marathon Saturday and concluding with a marathon on Sunday. I will spare you of all the details, just know that after hours of waiting to get onto the website to purchase our tickets. Events 5k - half marathon were completely sold out. This crushed all of our dreams, as I had several members from New Jersey ready to do one of the four races. We now learned that we should become runDisney race members. They made the races available 7 days before making it open to the public. Lesson learned.
