#135 - Accept The Running Challenge/Meet Charissa McFarland

In this week’s blog/podcast I will dive into this quote by Dr. George Sheehan:

“Everyone is an athlete. Some of us are training, and some of us are not! Let’s see how we can use this simple quote to unlock some amazing health results moving forward in our lifetime.

My name is Coach Tadris Parker, I have a passion for helping people become healthier one step at a time. My podcast is designed to help share stories of everyday people that are doing amazing things with their health through running, walking, and following a whole food approach. My blogs are my shorthand notes for the podcast. The notes may not always be complete, but they are short and to the point for a quick read. Continue to scroll down for a quick read and check out this week’s photos.

This Week's Topic: Accept The Running Challenge

Everyone's an athlete…….

When you hear that, do you see yourself as an athlete today? If not, what can you do to change that? Start with the first step. I love having a 5k race on the calendar to strive towards. Anyone can feel like a star at a 5k event. What’s nice about a 5k event is that it isn’t a team sport. When it comes to running everyone is cheering for not only their families crossing the finish line. Many of the crowd is there cheering you on too.

Sign up for a race and do it with a family member, like a younger sibling or your child. There is nothing like competing in the same event as one of your children. As I run these events I love seeing parents running with their children under 10 years old. I also see teenagers running a fast race, then going back to get mom or dad. It doesn’t matter if you run a 6-minute mile or that you run as slow as a turtle in peanut butter, you are a runner. In turn, you are an athlete.

If you like the sound of fans screaming for you as you cross the finish line. If you like the feeling of putting on a shirt with a bib attached to the front. If you would like to work towards hanging a medal on your wall. Accept the running challenge and put the fun in running by training with us with our RUNA5K program.

Meet Charissa McFarland

Charissa has accepted the running challenge. Charissa joined my program on January 19th and has completed 3 weeks of the RunA5K program so far. I got a chance to catch up with Charissa at one of our group training runs, to learn a little bit more about her.

Coach: What do you do for a living?

Charissa: I am a Sr. Financial Systems Analyst with a global commercial real estate company.

Coach: How long have you been in your profession?

Charissa: I have been in the IT industry for 24 years.

Coach: Do you have a family?

Charissa: I am married to Michael McFarland and we have two children Olivia who is 14 and Michael, Jr who is 10.

Coach: What made you want to get back into running at the start of 2022?

Charissa: I’ve gotten out of the practice of exercises and running and need a jump start and accountability to be re-focused and excited about exercising again.

Coach: I know you just began your journey with runtothebestyou.com, but how do you feel now since adopting this healthier lifestyle?

Charissa: I feel good and excited about my decision.

Coach: How do your family and friends enjoy this version of you?

Charissa: My friends and family are supportive and know that me living a healthier lifestyle is a positive change.

Coach: What are you excited about today, any special goals that you are working on at that moment?

Charissa: Throughout my life, I’ve always had to work hard at keeping my weight at a range that I’m comfortable with. My goal is to run/exercise consistently and continue with a healthy lifestyle so that I can be at a healthy weight.

Coach: Thank you for being on our show! Before we let you go........

WHAT can you say to our listeners who may be ready to start their journey tomorrow?

Charissa:

Deep down we all know what we need to do to live healthily. A lot of times we are nervous or don’t have the confidence to make a change. We all have an inner voice that tells us what we should do. My advice to others is to listen to your inner voice and take the leap to start your healthy lifestyle journey.

The Week That Was:

Thursday 2/10/22 the weather was beautiful. This beautiful evening in New Jersey did not feel like winter at all. The beautiful weather brought out some members that we haven’t seen in a while. It was so great to have this beautiful collection of members getting healthy together.

Shout-out to our two new members Dawn and Charissa for completing week 3 of our 10-week 8k training. We also had a visitor that Dawn brought, Renee from South Carolina. It was a pleasure to meet Renee and introduce her to the run, walk, run, and our crew.
