This Week's Topic:

Running, Intermittent Fasting & Retiring Shoes

Before I dive into when to retire your shoes, I wanted to address the running, intermittent fasting to control your weight. Our podcast used to be called; “The Running, Intermittent Fasting & Weight Loss Podcast.” In this week’s podcast, I decided to talk about that for a few moments.

Many beginners ask the question: How do they know when to retire their shoes? I specialize in helping beginners participate in their first race events. My answer varies from person to person. I try to encourage new runners to invest in a good pair of running shoes as soon as possible. It is ok to grab your old sneakers from the closet and begin running today if you are inspired to do so. However, we do not know how many walking miles are on that pair of sneakers. Walking miles count too. My answer may vary from person to person based on their height and weight also. Some of us wear down sneakers quicker than others. Our bodies are unique, some wear down their sneakers to the outside, while others wear down their sneakers to the inside. Some have high arches, while others are flat-footed.

When beginner runners come to me and want to run for weight loss, I encourage them to focus on running/walking just 3 days per week. To get the most out of your pair of shoes, it is helpful to drop some weight. Since we cannot out-run a bad diet, I help our members focus on keeping their nutrition real. Cut out the processed foods. Work on eliminating high inflammatory foods with our Keeping It Real Health Challenge. Finally work on shrinking how many hours in a day you are consuming food, including cream and sugar for your coffee. The average person is consuming food from the time they wake up with coffee, cream, and sugar until they go to bed with a late-night snack. Practicing TRF (Time-Restricted Feeding) will help cut out unnecessary calories, all without you having to count calories.

CLASSIC RUNNING SHOES

Ghost. Pegasus. Kayano. Rider. These titans have been some of the best-selling running shoes for decades and are commonly referred to by just one name. When asked for a shoe recommendation by new runners, or for those who aren’t sure what they need, we generally point to classics like these as a starting point. After all, there’s a reason the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus has been around for 38 years: It works for most people, most of the time. -Runners World Magazine (Read Full Article Here)

Final Thoughts:

The rule of thumb for retiring your shoes is anywhere from 250-400 miles. Using apps like Nike Run Club allows you to track every mile from the start of your running journey. Just like there are different shoes for all sorts of body types, how many miles you get from a pair of shoes will vary. There are some pairs that I get 200 miles on and I start to feel the breakdown. Yet other pairs of the same type of shoe, I may get 300 miles. A point to remember is this: WALKING MILES COUNT! Keep your running sneakers for running only. There are times, I think the sneakers are cool and I use them for practice runs and walking around town. That is why a pair of Pegasus may get me 300 miles one time and only 180 miles another time. The time spent walking around town never got counted, yet contributed to the overall breakdown of the shoe.

My favorite all-around running shoe - Nike Pegasus

My favorite racing shoe - Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% 2

The Week That Was

Closed Out The Week Strong!

A great week of practice. Thursday, we had to take two photos as the walkers were missing for one.

Saturday, the crew traveled to Beachwood, N.J. for a 4-mile trail run. It was challenging, yet very fun. Our Lisa Gallagher took second place in her age group. (60-64)

I was impressed with Melissa Southrey and Jessica Young for participating in the farthest distance to date. Not only did they cover 4 miles, but they also did it on rough terrain.

Great job to Chris Ballard, Addie, and her mother JoAnna for crushing this event with smiles on their faces.
