#133 - How To Dress For Running In The Winter

Episode #133 This week’s blog/podcast we will discuss:

“How To Dress For Running In The Winter”

At the start of a new year, many are excited to get started on a new health journey. People may have seen members in our program get great results through our walk/run program and want the same results for themselves. The #1 reason why they don’t join in January is due to the weather. Many who want to become runners decide to wait until it warms up in March or April. There are many advantages to starting sooner rather than later. In this week’s post, I will lay out how to dress so that you can melt the snow with your new love for fitness.

My name is Coach Tadris Parker, I have a passion for helping people become healthier one step at a time. My podcast is designed to help share stories of everyday people that are doing amazing things with their health through running, walking, and following a whole food approach. My blogs are my shorthand notes for the podcast. The notes may not always be complete, but they are short and to the point for a quick read. This Week's Topic:

The many benefits I touched on for beginning your running practice NOW are:

  1. Gain Mental Clarity

  2. Meet New Friends

  3. Start Feeling Accomplished

  4. Be Able To Run A 5k By Spring

  5. Start Melting Away Unwanted Fat

  6. Get A Jump On Spring/Summer Body Goals

Here Is How To Run Successfully This Winter:

  1. Grab your smartphone and check the outside temperature

  2. Dress by the “Feels Like” temperature NOT the actual temperature. The actual temperature may say 30 degrees but with the wind chill, it may feel like 23 degrees

  3. Dress as if it is 15-20 degrees warmer than it is. The last thing you want to do is start to overheat and feel weighed down with too much clothing. Once your body gets moving your core temperature will rise.

  4. Pro Tip - Do some jumping jacks, push-ups, lunges indoors for about 6-10 minutes to get the blood flowing and heat your core temperature up before stepping outdoors.

  5.  Avoid cotton since it absorbs moisture and holds it against your body. This will turn you into a pop-cycle and you don’t want that.

  6. Grab your Cold Gear (Under-Armour or Nike) that you invested in. This will wick the sweat off of you, keeping you warm and dry.

  7. Wear layers, including a base layer with a medium-weight or heavy long sleeve or vest over it depending on how cold it is.

  8. Don’t forget your running gloves, nice pair of socks to cover your ankles, and a dry wicking hat. Keeping the fingers, toes, and head warm is crucial.

  9.  If it is dark, wear something light-emitting or reflective, and a head-lamp.

  10. Use chapstick on lips to prevent chapping.

Additional Tip:

  1. Some advise that If it is slick outside, use something to enhance traction on your shoes like YakTrax.

When I run in the winter, I never use anything for traction. We have mild winters here in N.J. and when it snows, I go out and run in the snow. I avoid roads where plows may have gone over it and now it is turning to ice. Then, on the other hand, some roads are done well and it’s fine to run in the middle of the street. Use your best judgment.

Whether you are brand new to running or an experienced runner, wintertime is not the best time to go hard. Use the winter as an opportunity to have fun and run lightly. Practice hard on the good weather days. While your competitors are taking a total break during the winter, you are keeping your fitness alive and well.
