Fun Run Day: Ultimate Frisbee

On Tuesday, May 3rd, we showed members of our program what they could use their running for. We don’t have to train just for races. We can train for life. What can we do now that we are conditioned for running? Yes, pick teams and play a game of ultimate frisbee on a beach or a field.

Shirley Mae Breast Cancer 5k

CAME IN FIRST & DIDN’T KNOW IT

(In The Storm)

Took this photo right after I crossed the finish line at the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer 5k! At that moment I didn’t know that I finished first place in my age group.

I battled the wind and the storm…… I battled not getting a sub-25-minute 5k! I looked ahead at the finish line and decided to still give it all I had, saying to myself;

“Catch that guy and don’t let anyone pass you”

That last burst was the difference between getting 1st place or 2nd and I didn’t even know it.

I went home immediately after crossing the finish line…….Went online later in the morning to find out I placed first by only 4 seconds in front of the person that I told myself to catch.

Moral of the story……. Half of the battle is showing up, through the storms……. Fight against the challenges, trust your training, and fight till the end.

(It’s never over until it’s over)

This Week's Main Topic:

What is R.A.S.?

How can we tap into this on race day?

noun: reticular activating system

a diffuse network of nerve pathways in the brainstem connecting the spinal cord, cerebrum, and cerebellum, and mediating the overall level of consciousness.

Let me explain this in terms that we can understand.

Have you ever noticed that once you purchase your car, you see that car everywhere? If your friend gets a blue Jeep, you suddenly can’t stop seeing blue Jeeps everywhere. That is our R.A.S. at play. Our brain filters out the non-important stuff in our lives or else we would experience overload. Ever wonder why you have been dealing with the same negative thoughts for years now? That’s because you told your R.A.S. that it is important to you. When a negative thought comes to mind, we dwell on it. We don’t have to look for the negative thought, it can be triggered by just about anything, an old song, or some other old memory that will come back to mind. Understanding how our brains work in this way can help us troubleshoot this negative thought loop.

According to Mel Robbins, she says that we can break this negative thought loop with 5 easy words: “I’m not thinking about that.” I put this to work in my Shirley Mae Breast Cancer 5k that I mentioned above. That storm was coming straight at me, my time wasn’t going to be what I hoped, and I considered pulling up and coasting to the finish. Then I remembered to say: “I’m not thinking about that.” Then I was able to push hard to the finish and it was amazing. How many other things in our life can we change by training our R.A.S. to work for us instead of against us.

Let’s practice this daily so that when race day comes, or some other mental challenge comes our way, we can overcome it. Have you been wanting to become faster in races? Have you been wanting to go a further distance to reach a new running milestone? Have you been wanting to start a business, be in a loving relationship, be a present parent, lose weight, you name it? Now what thoughts/reasons come to your mind that say why you can’t?

Now it’s time to go to the mirror, give yourself a high five and say: “Yes I Can!”  Then be ready to put in the work to get you to your goals.

It’s time to control our thoughts and not let our thoughts control us! You Got This!
